The main target groups and their specific needs identified in the Project are given below:
A. Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Individuals
-
Lack of psychological literacy: They need accessible information on the fundamentals of mental health, stress management and emotional regulation.
-
Absence of mental health resources in sign language: Written and spoken content poses comprehension difficulties. They need visual and sign language-based education.
-
Limited awareness of seeking psychological support: Guidance is needed to help them understand the importance of accessing psychological support.
-
Reducing mental health stigma within the deaf community: Misconceptions and stigma surrounding mental health must be addressed among deaf individuals.
B. Mental Health Professionals and Psychologists
-
Limited knowledge of sign language and deaf culture: Specialized training is required to work more effectively with deaf individuals.
-
Inadequate therapy methods for the deaf community: Traditional therapy techniques may not be suitable; sign language-based therapy approaches need to be developed.
-
Lack of direct communication skills with deaf individuals: Basic sign language proficiency is necessary to reduce dependency on interpreters.
C. Sign Language Interpreters and Educators
-
Difficulty in accurately conveying psychological terminology: The existing sign language equivalents for psychological terms are insufficient. Development of specialized terminology is required in this field.
-
Need for training in mental health concepts: Interpreters and educators must enhance their knowledge of mental health and learn how to handle emotionally sensitive topics with deaf individuals.
D. NGOs and educational institutions supporting the deaf community
-
Lack of sign language-based psychological education: Accessible educational materials should be developed to promote psychological literacy.
-
Need to adapt educational programs for deaf individuals: Educational materials and learning methods should be tailored to accommodate the linguistic and cognitive needs of deaf learners to ensure full accessibility and inclusivity.
-
Need for more accessible digital psychological support platforms: Dedicated online portals and support resources should be developed to meet the specific needs of deaf individuals.
