Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals struggle to access mental health information in a way that is clear and understandable. Traditional psychological education is heavily dependent on written and spoken language, which makes it difficult for deaf individuals to fully engage with these resources. SignWell Academy aims to bridge this gap by offering a sign language-based PL Training Program. This will enable deaf individuals to gain knowledge about mental well-being, stress management and emotional resilience. Besides, the training will help them become more aware of the importance of seeking psychological support.

Within the deaf community, mental health stigma and misconceptions are widespread. These barriers prevent individuals from seeking psychological support and limit their access to available services. To address this, the Project will develop e-learning materials that present mental health concepts in sign language in a clear and accessible manner. This approach will help reduce biases and misconceptions surrounding mental health within the deaf community.

Mental health professionals and psychologists often lack the necessary training to communicate effectively with deaf individuals and develop appropriate therapy methods. Limited knowledge of sign language and Deaf culture prevents them from providing inclusive and effective psychological services. The SignWell Academy Project will develop guidance materials for psychologists and mental health professionals to help them better serve deaf individuals. These resources will promote accessible therapy approaches and contribute to a more inclusive mental health support system for the deaf community.

Sign language interpreters and educators face challenges in accurately conveying psychological terminology. Many mental health concepts do not have established sign language equivalents and it is difficult for interpreters to effectively communicate these ideas. Besides, there is a lack of training on how to explain mental health concepts to deaf individuals.

The Project will provide specialized training materials for interpreters and educators and help them gain a deeper understanding of mental health terminology and its appropriate use in sign language interpretation. This will improve communication quality in therapy and education settings and make psychological support more accessible to deaf individuals.

Many NGOs and educational institutions lack adequate resources to provide sign language-based psychological education. This limits the ability of deaf individuals to develop psychological literacy and restricts their access to mental health services. The SignWell Academy will offer a structured PL Training Program and E-Learning Portal for NGOs and educational institutions to help them better serve the deaf community. The Project will provide long-term access to online e-learning materials to provide that deaf individuals can benefit from sustainable mental health education.
